SHUL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND REMINDERS
תזכורות, אירועים ופעילויות של בית הכנסת
- Tisha
B'Av heatwave. In light of this year’s expected heat
wave on Tisha B'Av, I have been asked to clarify a crucial point
regarding the obligation to fast on Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av.
On Yom Kippur, which is Biblical in origin, a person is required
to fast the entire day even if he or she is ill – unless there
is danger to their life (פיקוח
נפש). On Tisha B'Av, if a person is suffering greatly
(see below) or is forced to lie down because of illness, or is
old and weak and may become ill upon fasting – even if there is
no danger to life – they should not fast. If in doubt, a doctor
should be consulted. A person with only a headache or similar
minor discomfort, however, is required to fast. (See Peninei
Halakha, https://ph.yhb.org.il/en/05-07-07/).
In light of this year’s expected heat wave on Tisha B'Av, one
should be particularly careful to hydrate oneself well before
the fast and remain in a cooled environment for the duration of
the Fast. If necessary, one should remain home rather than
endanger oneself by coming to shul and exposing oneself to the
dehydrating heat. Rabbi Aryeh Frimer
- Tisha
B'Av explanations. Rabbi Frimer will be giving
explanations of the kinnot, Saturday night in Hebrew and Sunday
morning in English. Hilchot Tisha B'Av when it falls on
Motzaei Shabbat. This year, the Fast of Tisha B'Av
begins on Motsaei Shabbat. This impacts on the observance of
various rituals both on Shabbat and on of Tisha B'Av. The
guidelines by R' Arye Frimer here (and on the Noticeboard)
will assist our members in their observance. In the merit of
properly mourning the destruction of the Bet haMikdash, may we
be rewarded to rejoice in its rebuilding!

Rehovot Zoom Presentation “Johann Sebastian Bach: The man
behind the music.” Presented by Gershom Martin,
Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at 19:30. Recent scholarship is
placing Bach’s life and works in a new light. Dr. Martin will
sketch what we now know about Bach’s life; the childhood
traumas that marked him for life; the power struggles in which
he became an unwilling pawn; the degree to which his extended
family acted as a safety net; and above all, the context of
