SHUL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND REMINDERS
- **This week!!** Our annual
"MIX IT UP!" Shabbatot - The Berman Community has
been blessed with many new families in the last several years.
To help the veteran members (“vatikim”) and newcomers get to
know each other, we are planning two consecutive
special Shabbatot. This Shabbat (Toldot (Dec. 3)),
we will be pairing new families with vatikim for
Shabbat lunch. Next Shabbat (Dec. 10), Shabbat
Vayeitzai, the Kiddush will be sponsored by the shul
in honor of our new members. On that Shabbat, we
are also planning to have name tags prepared
for all members, which you may optionally affix to your
clothing upon exiting to the kiddush. Non-Berman members are
invited to receive a name tag by registering here. We are looking for volunteers to
help with the preparations for the two Shabbatot. Please
contact Sharyn Strauss at syhks13@yahoo.com
if you are interested in helping.
- Scholar
in Residence- next week. On Shabbat Parshat
Vayetze, we are pleased to have as a Scholar in Residence, Dr.
Efraim Zuroff Chief Nazi-hunter of the Simon
Wiesenthal Center and director of its Israel Office and
Eastern European Affairs. Dr Zuroff will give two lectures in
English on: 1. My Life As a Nazi-Hunter: Successes, Failures,
and Insights (Friday Night the 9th of Kislev 5777 (Dec 9th,
2016) at 19:40), and 2. Holocaust Distortion in post-Communist
Eastern Europe: A New Threat to the Jewish Narrative of the
Shoa, on Shabbat, following Mincha at about 16:30. All are
invited
- Women
and girls who are interested in reading from Megillat Esther
in the women’s reading on Purim morning should contact Sheila Fieldust
(052)531-0922.
- I would like
to apologize for some remarks made during my recent Dvar Tora
which alluded to political events, for which some members
expressed to me their justifiable annoyance. The remarks were
not part of my original draft and were unintentional. My
sincere apologies. Shimon Krausz.
- Tax
deductions for donations to Bermans and other amutot.
Anyone who works in Israel (salaried or self-employed) and
pays Israel income tax, is reminded that contributions to
Bermans shul and other recognized 46א charitable institutions
are eligible for a 35% calendar-year-based credit against
their Israeli income. Instructions available here.
- ..and
on the topic of donations, any payments or
donations to us should not include coins,
only cheques or banknotes. Handling coins costs us time
(queued up waiting for a teller) and money (higher charges for
a teller transaction). Cheques may be made payable to the "Berman
Community Centre", "מרכז קהילתי ברמן", or some
variant thereof. Putting in "synagogue", "בית כנסת",
"Tiphereth Moshe", or "תפארת משה" can lead to problems with
the bank.
