SHUL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND REMINDERS
- Tisha beAv Nidheh
5776: Halachik guidelines when the Tisha beAv
fast is postponed from Shabbat to Sunday. Compiled by R.
Aryeh Frimer
This year Tisha beAv falls on Shabbat and, because
of the honor of Shabbat, public mourning practices are
postponed until Sunday. Regarding private mourning practices
on Shabbat Tisha beAv, Sefaradim permit conjugal
relations, while Ashkenazim forbid them, unless Shabbat is the
wife’s mikva night.
Minha this Shabbat
Hazon afternoon at Berman’s will be at 6:00 PM.
There are no restrictions on the menu of Seuda Shelishit,
which is the last meal prior to the fast, and meat may be
eaten. Unlike other Shabbatot, however, we
must stop eating before sunset (ca. 7:25 PM). The
prohibitions regarding washing begin at sunset as well.
Nevertheless, one does not change into non-leather shoes until
after Shabbat is over.
Shabbat ends at 8:05 PM.
One should then recite: “Barukh ha-mavdil bein kodesh
le-hol” before doing any melakha (work
forbidden on Shabbat). The customary Havdalah is not
said Saturday evening, except for the blessing on the candle “Borei
me-orei ha-esh” since it cannot be recited beyond
Saturday evening. One then switches into non-leather shoes. Ma’ariv
is delayed to permit congregants to change shoes and drive to
shul once Shabbat is out. Ma’ariv, Eikhah
and Kinnot begin at Berman’s at 8:30 PM.
The kinnot will be accompanied by short
introductions and explanations in Hebrew.
On Sunday morning, Shaharit will begin at
7:30 AM. Ashkenazim have the custom of
not putting on Tallit and Tefillin for Shaharit.
There are various customs among the Sefaradim. Kinnot
follow Shaharit, and will be accompanied by short
introductions and explanations in English. Minhah
at Bermans is at 7:00 PM, and Tallit
and Tefillin are put on then.
On Sunday night, Maariv is scheduled for
7:45 PM and the Fast ends at 7:53 PM. Havdalah
is then said consisting of the blessing over wine or grape
juice (or proper substitute) and the full blessing “Barukh
ha-mavdil” is said, without the use of spices. Since
this year Tisha beAv is postponed from Shabbat until
Sunday (the Tenth of Av), virtually all of the laws of the
Nine Days and Three Weeks end Sunday night with the fast's
conclusion, including the prohibitions on bathing, washing
clothes, hair-cuts and according to many authorities,
listening to music. However, because of the sadness of the
fast-day, Ashkenazim refrain from consuming meat or
wine (except Havdala) until Monday morning, though
most Sefaradim are lenient.
- Other Tisha BeAv Events:
Immediately following Shacharit and Kinot on Sunday morning,
there will be a shiur by Rav Motti Goldreich
on Aggadot relating to the Chorban (in Hebrew). On Sunday
afternoon at 5:00 PM, we will be screening the Holocaust
movie, Son of Saul.
