21:45. The Kronengolds. Full schedule on the Noticeboard.
SHUL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND REMINDERS
- Tikun Leil Shavuot.
The Education Committee has arranged a full schedule of
shiurim on Shavuot night starting at 11:00 PM, with lectures
in English and in Hebrew, and programming for all ages. A
printable sheet with the full schedule is available on the Noticeboard.
- Guidelines for Motsa'ei
Shabbat which is the Eve of Shavu'ot
by Rabbi Aryeh Frimer. This Saturday
evening (Motsa'ei Shabbat, motsa"sh)
is also the night of Yom Tov. This entails several
rules and guidelines regarding preparations, kiddush and
havdala:
- On motsa"sh one will need fire to light Yom
Tov candles, for Havdallah (recited as
part of Kiddush), for lighting Yahrzeit
candles, and for cooking. However, one is not
allowed to create fire on Yom Tov –
but may only transfer it. Therefore, it is best
to light a 48-hour candle on Erev Shabbat, as
the source of fire for motsa"sh.
- One may not perform any preparations for Yom
Tov (e.g., putting food on the plata,
setting the table or cutting the salad) until Shabbat
is out (after 20:30, see below).
- On Motsa"sh, Shabbat candles should
not be "glued" into place by melting their bottoms.
One can prepare small pieces of aluminum foil to hold them
in place. Alternatively, tealights can be used.
- Yom Tov and Yahrzeit candles should
preferably be lit before Kiddush.
Candles cannot be lit (nor any preparations for Yom Tov
performed) until Shabbat is out, and only after
the person lighting has said "Va-todi'enu" in ma'ariv
or the words "Barukh ha-mavdil bein kodesh le-kodesh"
[without G-d's name]. The Berakhot over the Yom
Tov candles are as usual: "le-Hadlik ner shel Yom Tov"
and "She-hehiyyanu."
- A special kiddush is recited which
incorporates havdala. The acronym
for the order of blessings is YaKNeHaZ
– Yayin (Borei Pri Ha-gafen), Kiddush
(usual Yom Tov Kiddush), Ner (Borei
me'orei ha-esh), Havdala (text
found in siddur ending ha-mavdil bein kodesh le-kodesh)
and Zeman (She-hehiyyanu). [A
woman who lit candles and recited She-hehiyyanu,
should not repeat it if she recites kiddush].
Finishing the berakha with “hamavdil bein
kodesh le-kodesh” is
imperative, and one does not fulfill one’s havdala
obligation by saying “hamavdil bein
kodesh le-hol” instead.
- For Havdala candles, one can
use two Yom Tov candles, or specially lit Chanukah
candles held together. When holding the 2 flames together
for Havdala, one should be careful not to have the candles
so close that they stick to each other. When finished, the
candles may not be extinguished, but should be
placed in a safe location (candelabra, coaster, Chanukiah
etc) to burn out naturally. Besamim are not
customarily used, since the Yom Tov meal
enhances our spirits like spices.
- From the gabbaim-
Mi-Sheberach Lecholim. As part of a periodic
"reset", we are removing
all names from the Mi-Sheberach list. If you want to add a
name, please send it by email to gabbai@bermanshul.org.
The list is intended for acute illness, and names will stay on
for only 2 weeks unless we are notified otherwise. In case of
chronic illness, please recite the name quietly from your seat
while we are saying the prayer in shul. If you have additional
name(s) that were not submitted by email, please write them
out before shabbat to hand to the gabbaim. Thank you in
advance for your cooperation. Refua Shleima. The Gabbaim.
- ..and another request
from the gabbaim: If you have a simcha or are
commemorating an event which you feel warrants your getting an
aliyah or other kibud, please inform Jerry Kriger
before Shabbat. The Gabba'im are happy to try and
accommodate all requests as best they can, but they cannot
be expected to keep track on their own of everything that
goes on in the community. Thank you.
- בקשה מהגבאיים:
אם יש לכם שמחה או אירוע שבגללו אתם חושבים שמגיע לכם עליה או כל

לעקב אחרי כל מה שקורה אצלינו בקהילה. בתודה מראש.

- Reason to feel good
about cheesecake: "R. Shlomo Yosef Zevin
explained that the purpose of the Torah is to endow the
mundane with spiritual value. We thus sanctify the acts of
eating and drinking by dedicating these behaviors to the
glorification of the Torah. Moreover, that is why the Torah
identifies Shavu‘ot with the harvest, and calls it Yom
Ha-Bikkurim"[http://www.yutorah.org/togo/shavuot/
Horwitz]... Reason to feel bad about cheesecake:
401 calories/slice.
