Bereavement and memorial:
- We are deeply grieved to
announce the passing of our member Renee
Grunebaum, z"l, wife of our member Sidney
Grunebaum. The funeral took place on Sunday,
April 26. Sidney, the children, and Renee's sister and
brother will be sitting shiva at Renee's home, 27/1
Herzog, through Friday afternoon, May 1. The number there
is 08-947-1130. Davening times are Shacharit: 6:15,
Mincha: 19:05, and Ma'ariv: 19:45. Mincha on
Friday May 1 at 13:30.

- THIS WEEK
On Shabbat Emor, May 1-2, Prof. Michael Fishbane
from the University of Chicago (divinity.uchicago.edu/michael-fishbane)
will be a scholar-in-residence at Bermans.
Prof. Fishbane’s writings range from the ancient Near East
and biblical studies to rabbinics, Jewish mysticism, and
modern Jewish thought. His many books include Biblical
Interpretation in Ancient Israel and The Exegetical
Imagination: On Jewish Thought and Theology. His
commentary on the Haftarot was published as part of the
JPS Bible commentary series and he has recently completed
a multileveled commentary on the Song of Songs. He will be
giving a shiur on shabbat afternoon after mincha in
English on his new commentary on the Song of Songs. The
Haftarah shiur on Shabbat morning will be extended from
11-12 to allow a more in-depth discussion of the haftarah.

- Lecture.
Sunday May 10th at Adat Shalom, Miller Street. Women in
Israel: A Different Kind of Conflict. Dr. Elana Maryles
Sztokman will discuss the ways in which ultra-Orthodoxy
is encroaching on women's basic rights in Israel. Dr.
Sztokman is a prominent Orthodox Feminist. Her first two
books each won the National Jewish Book Council Award.
She has lectured on gender in several institutes for
higher education, including Bar Ilan University, the
Schechter Institute, Young Judea and the Efrata Teacher
Training College. She also worked as Executive Director
of JOFA, The Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance.

Schweitz, Dr. Tamar Kadari, Bar-Ilan University and the
Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, “The Story of
