- Tisha beAv 5772: A Brief Digest (by Rav Aryeh A.
Frimer)
What to do when Tisha beAv falls on
Shabbat and the Fast has been pushed off to Sunday
Minha this Shabbat afternoon (Parashat Devarim) at Berman’s
is called for 6:00 PM. Since this year, the fast of Tisha BeAv has been
pushed off to Sunday, there are no restrictions on the menu of Seuda Shelishit
- which is the last meal prior to the actual fast. Unlike other Shabbatot,
however, we must stop eating before sunset (7:40 PM). The prohibitions
regarding washing begin at sunset as well. One does not change into non-leather
shoes until after Shabbat is over (8:20 PM).
Shabbat ends at 8:20 PM. One
should then recite: “Barukh ha-mavdil bein kodesh le-hol” before doing
any melakha (Shabbat forbidden work). The customary Havdalah
is not said Saturday evening, though the blessing on the candle “Borei me-orei
ha-esh” is said upon seeing candlelight. One switches into non-leather shoes.
Ma’ariv in Shul has been delayed to permit congregants to change
shoes and drive to shul once Shabbat is out. Ma’ariv, Eikhah
and Kinnot begin at Berman’s
at 8:45 PM. The kinnot will be accompanied by short introductions
and explanations in Hebrew.
On Sunday morning, Shaharit will begin at 7:30 AM. Ashkenazim
have the custom of not putting on Tallit and Tefillin in Shaharit.
There are various customs among the Sefaradim. Kinnot follow
Shaharit and will be accompanied by short introductions and explanations
in English. Midday (Hatsot haYom is at 12:47 PM). Minhah
is at 7:10PM and Tallit and Tefillin are put on then.
On Sunday night, Maariv is scheduled for 8:00 PM
but the Fast is not over until 8:07. Havdalah is then said
consisting of the blessing over wine (or proper substitute) and the blessing “Barukh
ha-mavdil” without the use of spices. Since this year Tisha be-Av
is postponed from Shabbat until Sunday, virtually all of the laws of the
Nine Days and Three Weeks, end at the conclusion Sunday night – including bathing,
washing clothes, and hair cutting. However, because of the sadness of the fast-day,
acts of joy including consuming meat or wine, and listening to music should not
be done until Monday morning.
- The movie "Escape from Sobibor" will be shown in the back of the schule
promptly from 4:40 to 6:40 p.m. on Tisha Ba'av afternoon (Sunday July 29th).
Afterwards, Henry Sussman will speak. (He is a concentration camp survivor). Mincha
at 7:10 Maariv at 8:00. Hope to see you. -Chaya Tannor and Sherman Rosenfeld
- Tiyul to Mercaz Shomron - only a few places left for the tiyul on Friday 3rd August.
