  • If anyone in the Shul is interested in joining a "closed" group for Weight Watchers, there is a wonderful group that will be starting at Givat Brenner on august 8th at 20:30 at night. A closed group means that the sessions go on for nine meetings, and no new people join after the session has started. When the nine meetings are done, if there are enough people for a new group, then we continue for nine more meetings (new people can join at this point). I joined the group this past March, and have found it to be a fabulous group, mostly people from the kibbutz, and there is a very friendly, outgoing and helpful atmosphere. The madricha is Tzippy, (don't know her last name), and she is very good and supportive. (and yes, I've lost weight :)) The group is open to both men and women. If you have any questions, please give me a call - Rachel Schecter 054-7613892.

  • Attention new olim (less than 10 years)! There is an excellent Ulpan in Ashdod that just started its most recent session on July 10th. There are between 15 and 18 of us in the current class, which is larger than usual. If we can get just 3 more qualified olim to join, the class can be split in half and we will all have a better learning experience. The class currently has olim (several who are multilingual) from Canada via the USA (that would be me), France, Portugal, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Bulgaria, India and Iran. Makes for interesting coffee breaks....
The Ulpan is conducted under the auspices of "HaMercaz L'Hach'vanat Olim v'Toshvim Chozrim L'Ta'asukah" (rough translation -- sorry, I'm still learning: "The Center for Preparing Olim and Toshvim Chozrim for Employment") under contract with the Misrad HaKlita (Absorption Ministry). It's conveniently located in northern Ashdod, around the corner from the Beit Canada absorption center, with convenient parking, public transportation about a minute away, and a really nice beach about a 15-minute walk.
Olim who have been here for less than 10 years, with at least an Ulpan Aleph level of Hebrew, are eligible to apply, and if accepted, the cost of the Ulpan is 100% subsidized (no out-of-pocket cost). In addition, there is a partial (60%?) monthly reimbursement of transportation costs. Besides teaching Hebrew that is specifically oriented towards getting familiar with job-searching and interviews, the Center also offers job counseling, job-locating, assistance with preparing CVs in Hebrew, and aptitude-testing with evaluations by psychologists who were once new olim themselves. Everyone is professional, friendly and helpful.
If you or someone you know is interested, please contact the Center THIS WEEK, as this is the latest that they will accept new students for this session. Call Ayelet, the manager, or her assistant Jessica at 08-852-4015, or you can reach Ayelet on her cell phone at 054-774-9371. Her email address is: ayelet.her@012.net.il Wishing everyone a successful klita. Yehuda Meir Lipson Galut ==> Rehovot, September 2010
